Ye Cannot Server God and Mammon Daniel Cory, June 22, 2024July 1, 2024 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?Matthew 6:24-25 I don’t personally believe that Jesus is saying that we can’t have goals or plans for things, (Luke 14:28). That being said, it appears that He is saying that we shouldn’t serve those things as masters; in other words, they shouldn’t take a high priority in our life to where our spiritual walk takes a back seat. It’s very easy to get caught up in life and forget about the bigger picture. Does increasing your salary take the front seat in your life? If so, then it’s your master. You’ve taken God off the throne and replaced it with something else. Think about the severity of what Jesus is saying. He is suggesting that because we can’t serve both masters, we shouldn’t even think about what we are going to eat and drink for that day. He isn’t just exaggerating, He is actually telling us that we shouldn’t even worry about that stuff. Why? Because life is more important than that, and God will take care of all of it for us. When all is said and done, the saved are forever in Heaven with Christ, we may look back at the brief vapor that was once our life on little old Earth. I believe we may even chuckle at the tiny issues that came up from day to day that we struggled with. Perhaps we need to meditate on this verse and think about all the things we waste time pursuing that just don’t matter.
